History of Pickleball
at ViewPoint

Fall, 2007, Clyde & Judy Bradford, Jerry & Judy Farr came back to viewpoint with a game they learned that summer.  Pickleball. Now what? They loved playing this new game but had nowhere to play it.  The volleyball group agreed to let them play PB when their court was not in use. And that was the birth of PB at Viewpoint.

March 2008, there were still no courts and more PB players. Judy and Judy kept up their efforts and did a lot of research about the sport and the benefit to VP. VP Management agreed to put in two temporary courts for the fall of 2008-2009. Jean Harris took over with working with VP Mgt. after Judy and Judy went back home for the summer.

2009 the courts were dropped from the budget due to the economy. By Spring of 2009, VP had around one hundred part-time and full-time players. April 2009, Judy, Judy & Jean were finally able to get VP Mgt. to approve the cost of two real PB courts. The first two courts were completed in May of 2009. We had a few summer players who were eager to get on the courts. Don & Ina Jenkins, Fred Nicola, Judy Bradford and Jean Harris.  Jean hit the first ball, and pickleball was ready to sail.

2010-2012 PB saw the numbers grow. We had over 120 players now, two beautiful courts, a new shed and life was good.

A board was put into place. Round Robins were starting to make their presence known, and we even had some tournaments. WOW, we are getting into this pickleball game.

2015 we saw the number of players increase by about 30%. A committee was formed and presented to Mgt the need for more courts. And, yep, we got three more courts. Benches, umbrellas, tables and NOW, we are in the big league. Well kind of. Between 2013 and 2015 the numbers grew to around 280. Between 2016 and 2018 our membership just keeps growing. The club hit over 400 in 2018. That summer, Mgt converted one tennis court into four more pickleball courts. YEA, no more bins for now. Well, that did not last long. In March of 2019 we had 518 members.

2019 was a great year for Pickleball. Word spread how fun PB is a great social game and great exercise for our active seniors. In the summer of 2019, Mgt allowed us to put up a temporary court in the ballroom. OK, it was not the best, but playing outside at 115 degrees was not an option as we had over 35 summer players. and one court.

What will 2019-20 season bring? Who knows.

History update:

The 2019-20 season was cut short due to the Covid -19 virus. Viewpoint Pickleball club did have a great year up until March of 2020. We had several tournaments, outside trainers that provided some of our members with lessons and lots of Round Robins. Then Covid 19 hit the US. Most of our residents that are part time left for home. So, its Aug 2020 and we still have the virus and most of our winter residents are not sure if they will be back until Oct of 2021.
